BURGER KING ‘It’s Flame-grilled’

16 years on, and we’re back with Burger King! Having shot Malaysia’s very 1st Burger King ad more than a decade ago, this felt very satisfying for me.   Especially since it involved a lot of crafting delicious burger patty shots & playing with fire.  With Agency TBWA & Lightflux Productions, we crafted the 1st film in a series of 3, that’s really food-porn related, something (unfortunately) lacking in most food ads in this GenZ age & something I always push for.  We want it to look appetizing & mouth-watering, always.  We had a professional Art Department team on this – Ah Kit – so everything was under complete control.  They had rented a griller machine & enhanced it with additional flame bars so we could achieve big & smaller flames.  Some of the fire moments were just magical.  Shot with 2 separate camera setups – indoors (for beauty complete Whopper & talent shots) & outdoors (for the grilling shots) of the Burger King outlet in Shah Alam, saved us a lot of time instead of traveling to another studio.

One challenge we faced, due to having to follow Burger King’s SOP was not to use a spatula for some burger patty scenes, but to use Tongs instead.  It doesn’t look as nice, but it still works.  The grilling shots went pretty smoothly – except for some ‘patty-enlargement’ requirements for certain scenes, & we needed a lot of time to beautify the burger shots – especially for the consumption scenes that took quite a few takes to get the most sumptuous expressions.  By the time we shot the beauty end consumption scene, it was night.  We had to cheat, relight & comp in trees to match with the other preshot scenes during the day.   DPed by Terrence, using the Freefly Ember for high-speed shots & the C400 for Beauty & Talent shots.  Food stylist Annette.
